There is a peculiar habit of enterprise software procurement. It works like this: the more expensive and consequential the decision, the more likely organizations are to choose the option that traps them.
It makes no sense. And yet it makes perfect psycho-logical sense.
Consider the current state of AI. OpenAI releases a breakthrough. Anthropic follows. Google announces something. DeepSeek appears from nowhere. Each frontier lab gets a 3-6 month headstart before the others catch up, overtake, or pivot in unexpected directions. The rational observer would note that certainty about which model will lead in 18 months is approximately zero.
And yet. The enterprise response to this uncertainty is not flexibility but commitment. A long-term contract with a single vendor. Custom tooling built on proprietary APIs.
Training programs optimized for one platform. The organizational equivalent of burning the boats except the boats are your future options.
Why?
Psycho-logic 1: The Certainty Premium
Humans overvalue certainty, even when that certainty is illusory. A three-year contract with OpenAI feels safer than a multi-vendor strategy because it reduces perceived complexity. The fact that it actually increases strategic risk — that OpenAI might change pricing, capabilities, or terms — is cognitively discounted. The discounting of future uncertainty in favor of present comfort is a well-documented cognitive bias. We prefer the devil we know, even when the devil is a moving target.
Psycho-logic 2: Satisficing in High-Stakes Decisions
When decisions are large and visible, decision-makers satisfice — they seek "good enough" solutions that minimize personal risk rather than optimize organizational outcomes. Choosing the market leader (today's market leader) is defensible. Choosing an architecture that preserves optionality requires explaining why you're not doing what everyone else is doing. The satisficing executive picks the vendor with the largest booth at the conference. It's not optimal but it is safe for them.
Psycho-logic 3: The Sunk Cost Trap, Anticipated
Organizations don't just fall into sunk cost traps. They anticipate them and accelerate toward them. The thinking, barely conscious, goes: "If we invest heavily in Vendor X, we'll be committed, and then we'll have to make it work." This is the corporate equivalent of buying a gym membership to force yourself to exercise. It occasionally works. More often, you're simply locked into a gym you no longer want to attend.
Premature Commitment & Its Woes
Now, here's where it gets really expensive. Enterprise AI implementation takes 6-12 months from decision to deployment. During that period, the model landscape shifts. Capabilities that were frontier become commodities. New use cases emerge that require different architectures. Pricing changes. Terms of service evolve. The "safe" choice becomes the anchor that drags.
Consider: in 2023, GPT-4 was the undisputed leader. By late 2024, Claude matched or exceeded it in key enterprise tasks, at different price points, with different safety profiles. Organizations that had built their entire AI infrastructure on GPT-4 APIs faced a painful choice: accept suboptimal economics and capabilities, or rebuild. Many are rebuilding now. The ones that built abstraction layers — the ones that treated model choice as a configuration, not a commitment — are simply... reconfiguring.
The MiiQ Premise
